Jills Win, Jacks Lose

June 4, 2009

RAL hosted the civil war track meet on Tuesday May 5th, 2009. The Mark Morris boys cruised to a 90-59 win, capturing first place in 12 of the 17 events in the meet. The RAL girls defeated the Lady Monarchs 82-68, finishing second in the Greater Saint Helens League standings.

On the boy’s side, it was a dull day for the Lumberjacks. RAL only managed to win 5 events, all of which were field events; no events were won on the track.

As usual, throwing events were the strong suit for the RAL boys. Arie Cottrell 12 won the shot put (45’2”), Angelo Folz-Edwards 11 won the discus (151’5”), and Grey Earnest 11 earned second in the javelin throw (138’10”).

Also in field events, Andrew Galloway 11 won the high jump (6’2”) and the long jump (19’8”). Kody Cassidy was the only other Lumberjack athlete to win an event, as he captured first place in the pole vault (14’).

On the girl’s side, the Lumberjills prevailed claiming first place in 11 of the 17 events total. Shauni Harding 11 won her three events respectively earning first in the 100 m (13.19), 200m (27.88), and the pole vault (10’6”).

Again, the Jills dominated the field events. Rachael Washington 11 claimed the triple jump (32’3”) and Meg Taylor 11 won the long jump (14’6.5”)

Tirzah Coalman 11 nabbed first place in three field events easily, claiming first in the shot put (31’2”), discus (101’7.5”), and javelin (96’10”). Both Coalman’s and Harding’s performances helped fuel the victory for the RAL girls.

“The Mark Morris girls flat out just sucked, they couldn’t compete with us,” jumping standout Rachael Washington stated.

Other winners in the Lumberjill’s stellar performance were Jasmine Gnuschke 12 in the 300 m hurdles (54.23) and Hannah Morgan 11 in the 800 m (2:36.61).

The RAL track team enters post season meets on Wednesday, May 13th as sub district prelims will be held at Ridgefield. All finals in events will be held on Friday, May 15th, also at Ridgefield. The District IV meet is held the following Friday, May 22nd at Washougal for those who qualify past the sub district meet.

The WIAA 2A State Championships are hosted by Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma from May 28th-30th for athletes who qualify past districts.
