C-Squad Teams: Cuts Being Mended

C-Squad teams are back on for RAL. Last year, pending district employees said that an budget cutting option would be to eliminate C-squads. To solve that problem, certain changes have been made.

“We weren’t going to have C-squad teams because the budget cuts took away too much money,” said Ty Morris, RAL Athletic Director.

Different courses of action have been taken in order to eliminate some money issues. Coaches took a 4% decrease in pay to help balance the costs of athletics. Pay-to-play was also introduced, where each athlete pays $35 in order to play each sport of their choice.

“Because of the pay-to-play, middle school sports have also had the opportunity to continue,” Morris said.

Having C-squad teams available allows more athletes to participate, especially younger athletes. Losing these teams would be hard for the RAL athletic program.

C-squad teams are available for both boys and girls sports again, although the teams will only be available if enough athletes turn out.

“As far as I know, I haven’t heard anything about not having a C-squad team for basketball, if enough ladies come to try outs,” said J D Ott, Varsity Girl’s Basketball coach and RAL history teacher.

Boys’ Tennis of this fall did not have a C-squad team because not enough athletes turned out. However, there was a C-squad volleyball team.

Budget cuts may have hit the district hard, but due to the actions being taken, sports are able to continue.
