Blood Drive
April 17, 2009 · written by Britton Baker
On Friday March 6th, RAL students participated in the second school blood drive of the year put on by Puget Sound Blood Center. Over 65 students participated with 45 of them being first timers. With each student donated a pint of blood we raised enough blood to save 150 patients at St, John’s medical center.
Every year, RAL holds a blood drive in the fall and in the early spring, to collect blood for our community. The blood given by RAL students goes to local hospitals and is used daily to save lives daily. Each pint of blood given can be used to save up to three people.
“I donated blood because it just feels right and I know my blood is saving lives.” said senior Ryan Ralston. He has donated over a gallon of blood while here at RAL high school.
The blood donated by RAL students helps premature babies, children and adults with cancer, leukemia, surgery patients and victims of traumatic injury.
Blood donations are critical to our community to maintain a stable blood supply for injuries and RAL has been a huge supplier this year.
“It was pretty cool getting out of class just to lie down and give blood. Then afterwards you got food. It doesn’t even hurt and the needle wasn’t that big like people told Me.” said DJ Smith 10th grade.
If you did not donate blood this year, don’t worry, there will be more blood drives in the up coming years at R.A. Long High School. Remember students 16 years or older may donate blood. Don’t forget to sign up next year!
