When you see the phrase “Math Problem of the Week” you immediately think of a semi-difficult math problem giving you a little bit of extra credit in your math class. The Math Problem of the Week, put out by the dean of Columbus State University Dr. David Rock is not that easy. If you don’t believe me just ask Evan Seidl, who recently completed one of these questions.
Every week Dr. David Rock puts out a new and challenging math question for anybody who wants to answer. The reward? Getting to represent your school, hometown, and have your name placed next to others who have completed the problem. And this Math Problem of the Week isn’t just for students in the United States. It is for any student in the world that has access to a computer.
High School students from Japan, Taiwan, Germany, United Kingdom…etc. send in their answers to try to get their names put on the leader board. Out of 306 answers sent in, only 198 of them were correct ones. And on that list of correct answers you will see a name that is from Longview, Washington. And that name is Evan Seidl.
“It’s cool seeing your name next to people from around the world,” said Evan.
Evan is a sophomore here at RAL and started doing the Math Problem of the Week questions in December of last semester. For this weeks question Evan was the 104th entry to get the problem correctly which is phenomenal. With only 65% of the answers sent in being the correct ones, Evan shows his mathematical genius by getting this one correct.
“I mostly do it for the extra credit in math,” said Evan.
