Community Service and Fun? What? CAP Benefit Concert is a Hit

“So I turned on the TV to the Olympics, hoping to see two Ukrainian guys killing each other, and what do I see? Water polo.” One of many of Joe Ward’s opening jokes poking fun at politics and the Olympics was met by much booing on behalf the girl’s water polo, almost all of which was in attendance of a CAP Warehouse benefit concert in the RAL auditorium on April 10th.
The crowd looked sparse at first, which led to a delayed start, but eventually filled out as the night went on. Joe Ward opened with some trademark jokes and served as host for the three bands in attendance: Almost No Covers, Ladies Should Listen, and Organikk Warfare.
“I had trouble thinking of community service for my senior project [Event Planning],” said Scott Shelton 12, an organizer of the event and member of the band Ladies Should Listen, “Travis Waldo helped me come up with the idea.”
The band Ladies Should Listen is made up of three RAL seniors: Travis Waldo, Shelton, and Tyler Quindiagan. After Almost No Covers opened with a three-song set, this up and coming band settled in for a ten-song set of half original music and half cover songs.
Crowd favorites included “Glycerine,” and Travis’s original rap.
“I just get random inspiration,” said Waldo of the band’s original songs, “We just have a good time playing.”
Other highlights of the night include beat-boxer Gabriel Shane, and the LCC band Organikk Warfare.
“Joe Ward’s older brother is in Organikk Warfare,” said Shelton, “He really hooked us up with the sound equipment and other bands.”
The final song was a medley of Blink 182, Beastie Boys, and Destiny’s Child that Ladies Should Listen performed. All of the songs had the same underlying beat, despite the different genres.
“We wanted to show that all music is connected,” said Waldo.
A total of 175 lbs. of food was collected by the concert organizers to donate to CAP Warehouse. All in all, it was a very successful night.
