Freshman Elections: Where were the candidates?

November 16, 2009

By Caity Wilson

Recently, new freshman officers have been chosen to lead the class of 2013.  Audrey Hamill is the president, Sierra Bell takes on the duties as vice president, Kaydee Shaw assumes the roll of secretary, and Leah Richards is the historian.

Although there are new freshman officers, no formal elections were held. Hamill, Bell, Shaw, and Richards all ran unopposed.

“Nobody knew about the elections. They weren’t advertised well enough,” said Shaw, “more people would have run if they knew positions were being chosen.”

The four officers are excited to be involved. Each has their own ideas of how to help better RAL.

“If I were to change something for the incoming freshman next year, I would have the freshman elections happen sooner because doing the homecoming float in such a short amount of time wasn’t easy,” said Bell.

Besides earlier freshman elections, many people say things about dances and what they wish would happen with them. However, maybe these ladies will be the ones to actually do something about it.

“I would like to improve the dances and make them more fun for the students,” said Shaw, “Also maybe have a dance after every football game.”

Hamill has quite a unique approach to her new position as president.

“Well, I’m hoping to coordinate an environmental awareness week in the spring,” said Hamill, “I want to do something that would get people involved and working.”

RAL has not had an environmental awareness week as part of the year since 2005 when an ASB president encouraged ASB to ride bikes to school during homecoming week.

Richards wants to be more involved in activities happening around RAL. Now she can, sometimes with a camera in her hand.

“I want to take pictures to capture all the school activities on camera,” said Richards, “I’m excited to be a leader.”

Hamill, Bell, Shaw, and Richards are ready for action. RAL sees great potential for this year’s group of leaders.
