Spanish Club Update: Spanish Club Relocating to MM
December 3, 2009
By Macie Jones
The budget cuts have had yet another impact on our school activities. Due to the recent budget cuts, Spanish Club is relocating to Mark Morris. It is still funded at MM but no longer here at RAL. French Club will be held at RAL instead of MM from now on.
Spanish Club was usually held in room 208, and advised by Ms. Johnson, the Spanish teacher.
Ms. Johnson would like to continue Spanish Club here at RAL. If not funded somehow she would like to continue on a volunteer basis because it would be difficult for students to go to and from MM for their meetings due to the lack of transportation.
There have been thoughts of a joint effort with French club and MM Spanish Club as well.
Together, they could work together to raise enough money to keep Spanish Club here. Fundraisers are pending to help raise money for the cause.
Spanish Club fully intends to continue the World Language Day activities at UW (University of Washington) and many others despite the budget cuts.
The budget cuts have affected every area in our schools today and this time it happened to affect our language department. Everyone has been having to make cut backs. There have been $5.1 million in school money cut, and there are 93 fewer staff.
“We try to keep things fair so at least we have a language club at each school.” said Mr. Fritch, Executive Director. Many questions are in the air about Spanish Club and are awaiting answers. There are still a lot of decisions to be made and different aspects to be discussed.
“This decision is final for this year, but next year we will try to make a change.” said Fritch
“ Spanish Club is important to me because I like the language and it’s nice to do different activities that help me learn the language,” said Jessica Wale 11.
Ms. Johnson is trying her hardest to make this transition as easy as possible for everyone in Spanish Club.
